Overview

The World Health Organization (WHO) launched a convention on tobacco control in 2003, and Sri Lanka was one of the first countries to sign the convention. In line with the convention, the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act was passed by the Parliament of Sri Lanka in 2006.

The National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol is an institution established in accordance with the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act, No. 27 of 2006, to implement legal provisions on tobacco and alcohol prevention in Sri Lanka.

Objectives

  • To identifying the policies on protecting Public Health.
  • To elimination of tobacco and alcohol-related harm through the assessment and monitoring of the production, marketing and consumption of tobacco products and alcohol products.
  • To make provision discouraging persons especially children from smoking or consuming alcohol by curtailing their access to tobacco products and alcohol products.
